Police make arrest in northwest Charlotte homicide

A 43-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the death of a Charlotte man in October, police said.

Officers arrested Derek Lamont Kline as a suspect in the death of Joseph Bryant, 50, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said.

On Oct 2, Bryant, 50, was killed in a home in the 3700 block of Avalon Avenue, near Freedom Drive and Interstate 85, police said.

Police were called around 6 p.m. that day in response to an assault with a deadly weapon. Medic pronounced Bryant dead at the scene. Detectives canvassed the neighborhood looking for possible witnesses, police said.

On Oct. 10, Kline was arrested in New Jersey on unrelated charges. Detectives signed a warrant for murder charges on Kline, and the extradition process will begin immediately, said police.

There is no current timetable for Kline’s return to Mecklenburg County.
