Rescuer helps woman avoid train collision in Gastonia

A truck driver is credited by police with helping a woman escape from her SUV shortly before it was struck by a train Thursday morning in Gastonia, police said.

No injuries were reported in the incident, which took place shortly after 6:15 a.m. on Northwest Boulevard, near Bessemer City Road at the western edge of Gastonia.

Police said a woman from South Carolina tried to make a U-turn at Receiving Street, near the Wix Filters plant, but her vehicle got stuck on the tracks at a crossing. The driver of a waste collection truck noticed the vehicle and helped the woman get out of the SUV in time.

A Norfolk Southern train then slammed into the vehicle, pushing it about 100 feet down the track.

Police said they are continuing to investigate the incident.
