Police: Man who admitted to Monday shooting is charged with murder

A man who identified himself to police as the shooter has been charged in the slaying of another man at a north Charlotte home on Monday, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police say.

Police have charged William Anthony Cagle, 51, with murder and possession of a firearm by a felon. He is jailed at the Mecklenburg County jail without bond.

Police say Cagle knew the victim, identified as Emery Curtis Wampler, 34, but additional details about the incident were not released early Tuesday.

Authorities were sent to a home on Katelyn Drive a little after 1 p.m. Monday in response to a shooting, said Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Capt. Todd Garrett, who heads the University City Division. When they got to the house near Prosperity Church Road, they found one man dead. A second person who was still at the scene told responding officers that he was the shooter. Police said the shooting happened during an argument.

Police took Cagle to CMPD’s uptown headquarters, where they interviewed and later charged him.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call 704-432-TIPS and speak directly to a Homicide Unit detective. Detective Hefner is the lead detective assigned to the case. The public can also call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600 or visit the Crime Stoppers mobile app website at
