Police: Man shoots gun into air outside Hickory club

A man who fired a gun into the air early Sunday outside a Hickory nightclub told police that he was trying to scare away some people who were assaulting him, Hickory police Lt. James Kerley said.

About 1 a.m., Adonis Rutherford, 24, began firing the gun outside Visions Martini Bar and Lounge, police said.

“The subject said he was being assaulted, and he fired the shots into the air to scare the assailants off,” said Kerley, adding that he did not know the extent of Rutherford’s injuries.

Rutherford was charged with a city code violation for firing shots within the city limits.

Kerley said the witnesses reported Rutherford leaving the scene in a car that police later found. The driver of the car, Tyler Hartsoe, 22, was charged with misdemeanor possession of marijuana.

Kerley said police have not been able to locate the people Rutherford said were assaulting him.

Police also said they recovered the firearm that Rutherford fired, and it was seized.
