Iredell mother accused of abusing children

An Iredell County mother has been accused of assaulting her two children and then kicking a hole in a wall as officers tried to arrest her last weekend.

Valerie Rose Wirtheim, 30, of Mooresville, was arrested Saturday and charged with child abuse, resisting officers and injury to real property, according to the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies said they responded to a call at a residence on Carolina Wren Drive and were told by the property owner that a woman who was renting a room had assaulted her 13-year-old daughter and 8-year-old son.

Investigators accused Wirtheim of throwing her daughter on a bed and striking her in the head. When the son tried to intervene, officers said, Wirtheim struck him in the side of the head.

Deputies said they noticed signs of assault on both children, and they said the mother admitted striking the children.

While Wirtheim was being taken into custody, deputies said, she resisted arrest and kicked a hole in a Sheetrock wall.
