A Catawba County man died Friday night when the motorcycle he was driving crashed into a wooded area, Newton police said.
Police said an officer was trying to stop the motorcyclist for a traffic violation, but police indicated the officer was not in close pursuit.
The dead motorist was identified by police as Timothy Shyler Kincaid, 28, of Conover.
Investigators said a Newton police officer noticed a motorcycle pass him at a high rate of speed about 10:45 p.m. Friday on southbound N.C. 16 near Burris Road. Police said the officer started to follow the motorcyclist and noticed the driver slow and then go through a red light on N.C. 16 at Mount Olive Church Road.
At that point, police said, the officer turned on his lights and siren and attempted to find the motorcylist. The officer got close enough to see the driver turn onto East P Street Extension, police said.
A short time later, the officer found the motorcycle crashed in a wooded area on East P Street Extension near St. James Church Road. The driver had died at the scene, police said.
