Domestic violence awareness advocates to host tree lighting

Advocates for domestic violence awareness will host their annual tree-lighting Monday, placing 59 ribbons for people across the state who’ve died because of intimate partner violence.

The Mecklenburg Domestic Violence Advocacy Council is hosting the event at 5:30 p.m. Monday at Charlotte-Mecklenburg police headquarters, 601 E. Trade Street, in uptown Charlotte. Attendance and parking are free.

In Mecklenburg, three women have been killed as a result of domestic violence.

Domestic violence homicides have been down in the last few years. The state has averaged 92 domestic violence homicides a year since 2002. Mecklenburg has averaged nearly seven a year in that period. Cleve R. Wootson Jr.
