Hickory man charged in fatal New Year’s Day stabbing

A Hickory man has been charged with murder after a stabbing victim died early Friday, officials said.

Christopher Daniel Mackey, 18, was initially charged with assault with a deadly weapon after the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office said he repeatedly stabbed Phillip White, 33, Thursday night.

Sheriff’s deputies responded to a home on 43rd Avenue Place NE in Hickory around 10:15 p.m. New Year’s Day and said they found that White had multiple stab wounds on the right side of his torso.

Mackey ran from the scene before deputies arrived and was later found at his girlfriend’s nearby home, officials said.

White was taken to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte and spent several hours in critical condition but died early Friday morning, the sheriff’s office said.

Mackey, who is being held at the Catawba County Detention Center under no bond, has since been charged with murder. His first court appearance is scheduled for Monday.
