CMPD: Teen mom charged in death of infant son

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said Wednesday they have charged a teen mother in the death of her infant son.

Daniela Villarreal, 17, was charged with murder and felony child abuse in the death of her son, Luis Miguel Jr., who was born Dec. 11. He was less than a month old when he died Tuesday, police said.

Police said they responded to a call for an unresponsive infant at 4:20 a.m. Tuesday in the 2200 block of Canterwood Drive. Medic took the baby to Carolinas Medical Center-University, where he was pronounced dead.

Detectives determined that the infant was physically assaulted, which led to his death, CMPD said.

Villarreal voluntarily came in to speak with police Tuesday night, and was charged in the case following the interview, police said.
