An 8-year-old boy died after falling through the ice on a Rowan County pond Sunday afternoon, Salisbury police said. Police received a report of a drowning at 2:39 p.m. at Hurley Park in Salisbury, according to a police department news release.
The victim was not identified.
Three boys, the victim and two 11-year-olds, were playing near the ice-covered pond when the 8-year-old walked onto the ice, causing it to break, the release said.
The 11-year-olds tried to reach him with sticks but couldn’t, and they called 911.
Rescuers found the boy within 18 minutes of being dispatched, the release said. He was pronounced dead at Novant Health Rowan Medical Center about 4 p.m. Cleve Wootson
