Pedestrian killed in Steele Creek area; driver charged

A man was hit by a car and killed while crossing a street in the Steele Creek area Tuesday evening, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said.

A 2005 Subaru Impreza traveling at a “high rate of speed” on John Price Road passed a car over a double-yellow line and crossed into the oncoming lane of traffic at about 6:30 p.m., police said. The car struck a pedestrian trying to cross the road.

Jeremy Tyrell Barnes, 22, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Subaru, 36-year-old Jonathan William McCallister, was taken to the hospital with minor injuries and then charged with involuntary manslaughter, reckless driving, and driving left of center, police said. Alcohol is not suspected as a factor in the crash.
