Charlotte-Mecklenburg police arrest sex offender who tried to enter preschool

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police on Friday arrested a 51-year-old sex offender who they said tried to enter Hickory Grove Preschool and Daycare on Hickory Grove Road on Monday morning.

Police charged James Sackett with being a sex offender who was unlawfully on the premises of a school. He was jailed on a $75,000 bail.

Sackett tried to enter the preschool about 10:30 a.m. Monday, police said. Staff members recognized him as a resident of a nearby transitional residence for sex offenders and immediately notified their security, who then contacted police.

“At no point did Mr. Sackett gain access to the interior of the school or make contact with any children,” Charlotte-Mecklenburg officer Jessica Wallin said.

Police arrested Sackett without incident Friday morning.

Police ask that anyone with information about the case or Sackett call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
