Suspect sought after body found outside Troutman Animal Hospital

Iredell County sheriff’s investigators are searching for a suspect in the killing of a man whose body was found outside Troutman Animal Hospital on Murdock Road early Tuesday.

Authorities said they were searching for Jeffrey Allen Gillespie, 33, in the death of his estranged wife’s boyfriend, Robert Joseph Swedlund, 25.

Gillespie left in a white 2004 Acura with tinted windows, chrome wheels and North Carolina license plate CJT 4791, Sheriff Darren Campbell told reporters at the scene.

A newspaper carrier discovered the body about 3 a.m., Campbell said.

Two hours earlier, a woman had called authorities to report that her estranged husband texted her saying he’d shot her boyfriend, Campbell said, according to WBTV, the Observer’s news partner.

Surveillance footage shows Swedlund and Gillespie meeting outside the animal hospital, WBTV said. Authorities believe the two set up the meeting and that Swedlund arrived first.

Anyone who knows Gillespie’s whereabouts is asked to call 911. Staff Photographer Davie Hinshaw contributed.
