18-year-old charged in July 4 Charlotte homicide

An 18-year-old was charged with murder in the July 4 shooting of Markas Vereen, who was found in a car that crashed into the entrance of the cancer unit at Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center.

Ricco Doral McHam Jr. of Charlotte also was charged with possession of a firearm by a felon. Police are not saying what information and evidence led to McHam’s arrest on Tuesday.

The car carrying the 19-year-old Vereen and another victim was apparently trying to reach the emergency room next door. Police have not identified the other victim, who was shot in the leg. Police also are not saying if they know the motive behind the shootings.
