Police cite cell phone video in charging Charlotte mom with child abuse

With cell phone video as evidence, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said they charged a 35-year-old woman with abusing her children.

Chermicka Smith turned herself in Tuesday at the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office, where she was served warrants for three counts of misdemeanor child abuse inflicting physical injury.

Last Thursday, patrol officers responded to a call about child abuse at a home on St. John Street, off Beatties Ford Road in west Charlotte.

Police said they obtained cell phone video from a family member that shows the abuse. Police aren’t saying how the children were abused.

Smith pleaded guilty to food stamp fraud in 2004, misdemeanor larceny in 2006, 2010 and 2013, fleeing in a motor vehicle to elude arrest in 2011 and two counts of shoplifting in 2011, court records show.

Smith was placed on probation and ordered to perform community service for the crimes, records show.

Anyone with information in the abuse case is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
