Two weeks before classes begin, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools still has 292 teacher vacancies posted on its website.

The school board will get an update on hiring Tuesday, as well as other aspects of getting ready for the Aug. 24 opening day. Plans for mobile classrooms, transportation, school renovations and technology are also slated for Tuesday’s back-to-school report.

The online listings likely include some jobs where candidates have been offered jobs but the paperwork isn’t finished. But the scope of teacher vacancies indicates a challenge as the district gears up to open with almost 148,000 students and more than 18,000 employees.

▪ What to expect: The opening-of-school report is the only major item on Tuesday’s agenda.

▪ Time and place: 6 p.m. Tuesday, in the meeting chamber of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Government Center, 600 E. Fourth St.

▪ How to weigh in: Three-minute public remarks on any topic will be heard early in the meeting. Sign up on-site or call 980-343-5139 before noon.

▪ How to watch: Meetings air live on CMS-TV Cable 3 and are shown again at 6 p.m. Wednesday. Go to www.cms.k12.nc.us/boe/Pages/SchoolBoardMeetings.aspx for a live video link and an agenda, which includes links to supporting documents.
