Local Winners Dominate Southern Contest

Charlotte-area students were four of the 12 winners in the fourth annual Southern Teachers Student Art contest, with the top selections representing seven states.

Maryclaire Farrington of Cannon School in Concord (“Dawn on Campus”), Brittany Halberstadt of Providence Day School (“Iconic Lamp Post,” pictured here), Jack Harris of Gaston Day School (“View From the Quad -- Henry Center”) and Akanima Okpokowuruk of Charlotte Christian School (“An Upper School Knight”) were among the nearly 400 submissions. The winning entries will be reproduced on the Southern Teachers Agency website and in its art calendar for the 2013-14 academic year.

The calendar will be sent to hundreds of private and independent schools around the South. The winning students also receive copies of the calendar and gift certificates for art supplies.

Southern Teachers Agency sponsors the contest for eighth- through 12th-graders to submit artwork depicting their schools with distinctive, recognizable architecture of campus structures or buildings. Winners came from North Carolina, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, Tennessee and Texas.
