Students, Panthers star emphasize breakfast

Charlotte-Mecklenburg students appeared in a commercial with Carolina Panthers linebacker Luke Kuechly to create an awareness campaign about the universal breakfast program, which provides free school breakfast to students in the district.

CMS students were invited to participate in a social media contest and poster contest in which they shared reasons they eat school breakfast. Tan’Queisha Beckham, Emmanuel Daniels, Bahijah Safiya Mohammed and Kristopher Thomas from West Mecklenburg High and Garinger High student Marquise Richardson won the social media contest. Fourth-grader Kamya Surratt and eighth-grader Morgan Harris from Westerly Hills Academy won the poster contest. CMS Child Nutrition Services collaborated with Youth Empowered Solutions (YES!), the Southeast Dairy Association and HealthCorps on the program.

During the commercial, student reporters ask Kuechly how he stays on top of his game. All of his answers relate to eating breakfast each day. The commercial is to air in all CMS schools.
