Twelve River Gate Elementary fifth-graders were selected to represent Brazil in the Global Elementary Model United Nations in Dallas, Texas, in May. They will advocate for Brazil’s interests by giving speeches and making decisions with students from around the world in two-day sessions.
Students have been meeting once a week after school to learn about issues facing Brazil, including child labor, sustainable development, ecosystem management and climate change. Most of their work involves public speaking.
Each student on the team participates in a United Nations committee, including the World Health Organization, Human Rights Council, Commission on the Status of Women and Economic and Social Council. The students have begun fundraisers; the school has set up a donation page at www.gofundme.com/63qwvo.
