Mecklenburg students win N.C. State scholarships

Three Mecklenburg County students have won major scholarships to study in the textiles program at N.C. State.

Matthew Coats, of Providence, won the John Copeland Centennial Scholarship, valued at $40,000 over four years. He is president of the school's Key Club and heavily involved in charity projects, including a program that provides breakfast for homeless people.

Maggie Kramer, of Ardrey Kell, won the Wells Fargo Foundation Scholarship and McMichael Scholarship, valued at $20,000 over four years. She is a varsity swimmer and member of the National Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society.

Kaitlyn Baker, of Matthews, is transferring to N.C. State from Duke and won the Carter Foundation Scholarship, valued at $12,000 over four years. She attended N.C. Governor's School and volunteers with the Charlotte Rescue Mission.
