Twenty-four high school seniors from the Charlotte area have been named winners of college-sponsored National Merit Scholarships, according to the Illinois-based organization.
The group includes 11 Mecklenburg County students.
The local winners are among about 2,500 nationally to win the awards. The National Merit Scholarships Corporation previously announced scholarships winners on April 23 and May 7, and will announce a final group of winners on July 14.
Winners are chosen on the basis of their scores on the Preliminary SAT, along with academic records, leadership and involvement in extracurricular activities. In addition to the Mecklenburg winners, there were four students chosen from York County; three from Cabarrus County; two from Iredell and Union counties; and one from Rowan and Stanly counties.
