Western Carolina University moved its winter graduation ceremonies outdoors Saturday due to a bomb threat, school officials said.
Commencement exercises had been scheduled for the Ramsey Center, Western Carolina’s on-campus indoor arena. But due to the threat, school officials said, they moved the event to E.J. Whitmire Stadium.
It was held in unseasonably mild conditions, with sunshine and temperatures in the upper 50s. About 650 students received diplomas, and law enforcement officials estimated between 6,500 and 7,000 people were in attendance.
School officials said the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the threat.
