Once again, Morehead STEM Academy has the longest wait list of any magnet program in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, according to results of this year’s first lottery.

More than 550 students are hoping for a spot to open up at the K-8 school near the University City area.

In total, more than 24,500 students applied for seats at one of the district’s magnet programs for the 2015-16 year, about 2 percent more than last year (here are last year’s lottery results). A shade less than 3,000 are on the wait list this year.

Much can change before school starts. Some parents will secure a seat at a magnet school, and later opt for their neighborhood school or a private school. Applications are open for the second lottery, to be held in June.

Here are the magnet schools with the longest wait lists:

▪ Morehead STEM Academy: 556

▪ Park Road Montessori: 341

▪ Charlotte Engineering Early College at UNC Charlotte: 325

▪ Irwin Academic Center LI/TD: 219

▪ Chantilly Montessori: 167

▪ Elizabeth Traditional: 155

▪ Myers Park Traditional: 154

▪ Cotswold Elementary IB: 152
