Hurricane and now Tropical Storm Harvey continues to bring catastrophic and deadly flooding to south Texas.

Emergency officials say the best way to immediately help the Houston area’s flooded residents is by donating to responsible charities that are working directly with the victims.

Lowe’s, the home improvement store based in Mooresville, has responded by donating $500,000 to American Red Cross disaster relief.

Here are three ways you can help the helpers:

American Red Cross: Donate online at www.redcross.org or by phone at 1-800-HELP NOW (1-800-435-7669). Text HARVEY to 90999 to make a $10 donation. Or send a check by mail to American Red Cross, P.O. Box 37839, Boone, IA 50037-0839.

Samaritan’s Purse: Donate online and find information about volunteering to help in the flooded areas at www.samaritanspurse.org. Or send a check by mail to Samaritan’s Purse, P.O. Box 3000, Boone, NC 28607.

Salvation Army USA: Donate online at www.helpsalvationarmy.org or by calling 1-800 SAL-ARMY. Or send a check marked “disaster relief” by mail to The Salvation Army, P.O. Box 1959, Atlanta, GA 30301.
