Kenny Bachman, 21, didn’t know where he was when he woke up next to the Uber driver in a car bound for the Garden State.

The last thing he remembered was being at the bar Friday in Morgantown, West Virginia. Bachman had gone there to meet up with some friends he went to high school with, Bachman told McClatchy. He planned to stay for the weekend.

But after a dozen Coronas and some vodka shots, the night didn’t exactly go as planned.

Bachman’s friend told him that they went to a convenience store sometime that night. His friend went inside and told him to wait for him. When his friend came outside, Bachman was gone, he said.

It turns out Bachman had used his phone to order an Uber to take him home — to South Jersey. Then blacked out after he got into the car.

By the time the disoriented Bachman woke up in the Toyota Sienna, he was about 30 minutes away from his hometown in Gloucester County, New Jersey. That’s a roughly 300-mile trip.

The driver told him he answered a phone call from his friend while Bachman was asleep and racked up toll violations because he didn’t have money to pay the tolls, Bachman said.

“I woke up at 3 a.m. and probably got home at like 9:30 a.m,” Bachman said.

Bachman ended up with a fare of $1,635.93. On top of that, Bachman allegedly told the driver he’d pay him cash to cover the tolls, Bachman said. He says he stopped at a CVS near his home and used the store’s cashback option to give $20 to the driver.

The Uber charge included a $3.94 base fare, a $2.35 booking fee, $696.95 for distance and $115.90 for time, according to, which first reported the story. The publication said the trip would have been just $819.14 if it weren’t for surge pricing, which doubles every charge except the booking fee.

Bachman says he was shocked when he saw the final cost of the trip. “I feel like there’s very little I could have done to reverse it,” he said.

Uber confirmed to McClatchy that the trip happened and that the driver got Bachman to his chosen destination. The company declined to comment further.
