On Thursday, friends of Al Gorman weren’t sure how they were going to give him a decent burial.

The 73-year-old Army veteran had only recently escaped years of homelessness before he was hit and killed while riding his bicycle last week.

But after The Observer wrote about Gorman on Friday, readers reached out to help his friend Gail Wellborn pay for his funeral. A GoFundMe.com fundraising site had collected more than $3,300 from nearly 70 people by Friday afternoon.

His funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at James Funeral Home, 10520 Arahova Drive, Huntersville, according to his obituary. Internment will take place at the National Cemetery in Salisbury at 2 p.m. Wednesday with full military honors.

“We want to thank everybody that reached out,” Wellborn said Friday. “It’s been beautiful.” Eric Frazier
