Charlotte 49ers to face Western Kentucky in Conference USA women’s soccer championships

Charlotte (9-8-1, 5-4-1) opens quarterfinals play against Western Kentucky (12-6, 7-3) on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

The 49ers, who enter the tournament as the No. 6 seed, were 7-1 at home this season.

Conference USA Offensive Player of the Year Martha Thomas leads Charlotte with a conference-leading 26 points and a career-high eight assists. A junior, Thomas scored nine goals and has ranked among national leaders in several categories throughout the season. She was named first-team all-conference.

Also recognized by the league was Charlotte’s Megan Greene, named C-USA Freshman of the Year. She matched Thomas in scoring with nine goals and was selected to second-team all-conference.

Charlotte senior Katie O’Neill also made the league’s second team. She scored three goals - the first time in her career and 13th in program history - against Louisiana Tech to highlight her season.

Defender/midfielder Riley Orr, named third-team all-conference, joined Greene on the league’s all-freshman team. She was the primary set-piece specialist taking free kicks and corner kicks. She had eight assists and scored her only goal off a corner kick at Florida International.

Western Kentucky’s Jason Neidell was named C-USA Coach of the Year.
