The Charlotte 49ers picked up their fourth straight Conference USA victory by cranking out 16 hits behind and eight-inning performance by starter Sean Geoghegan to roll past Old Dominion 9-7 in Friday’s series-opener.
Logan Sherer and T.J. Nichting each collected three hits while Brett Netzer’s three-run double in the fourth and Zach Jarrett’s solo homer in the eighth provided offensive sparks.
Charlotte is 11-13, 5-8 C-USA and Old Dominion 14-13, 3-7.
Clemson 5, North Carolina 2: Matthew Crownover allowed two unearned runs with eight strikeouts in 7 innings to lead host Clemson (15-14, 6-7 ACC). The Tar Heels fell to 17-12, 6-7.
Crownover (5-1) allowed seven hits, no earned runs and two walks. Taylor Vetzel pitched the final 2 innings for his first save.
Davidson 7, Rhode Island 2: Senior Clark Beeker limited the Rams to two runs over 8 1/3 innings in Kingston, R.I. Beeker recorded six strikeouts while allowing five hits in his second win.
Davidson (14-10, 4-3 Atlantic 10) outhit the Rams, 14-5. Shortstop Alec Acosta went 3-for-4 with an RBI to lead both teams.
Rhode Island is 7-11-1, 1-3.
Mississippi State 7, South Carolina 5: Playing through a 53-minute in-game rain delay, the host Bulldogs (21-12, 5-6 SEC) scored six unearned runs in the second and held off a late rally by the Gamecocks (20-11, 5-6).
Florida State 1, N.C. State 0: Brian Brown worked a career-long seven innings, but a seemingly harmless pop-up to shallow right center found a landing among three converging fielders. The throw home was on the money but a touch late, allowing the Seminoles (25-7, 11-3 ACC) to score the game’s only run.
The Wolfpack is 18-11, 6-7.
High Point 6-17, Winthrop 2-2: The host Eagles (19-12, 2-6 Big South) dropped two games, resuming Thursday night’s game that had been suspended due to inclement weather. The Panthers are 16-13, 6-2.
