Clemson coach Dabo Swinney breaks down 2019 recruiting class
Clemson’s 2020 recruiting class is shaping up to be perhaps its best ever. The Tigers added their biggest piece yet on Tuesday.
Clemson landed a commitment from defensive tackle Bryan Bresee on Tuesday.
The 6-foot-5, 290-pound Bresee is the top-ranked player in the country, according to the 247Sports Composite ranking that factors in all recruiting networks.
The Damascus, Maryland native chose the Tigers over offers from Alabama, Ohio State, Georgia, Penn State and others. He pointed to his relationship with defensive tackles coach Todd Bates, defensive coordinator Brent Venables and head coach Dabo Swinney as a big reason why he chose the Tigers.
“I would like to thank coach Bates, coach Venables and coach Swinney and the entire Clemson coaching staff for their support during this process,” Bresee told CBSSports and 247Sports. “This has truly been a blessing. I’m all in.”
Clemson has had plenty of success developing defensive linemen as Christian Wilkins, Clelin Ferrell and Dexter Lawrence are projected to be first round picks in the 2019 NFL draft.
And he said he’s excited about the opportunity to play for defensive line coach Todd Bates.
“Coach Bates is such a genuine guy who really loves all of his players,” Bresee said. “I get that feeling from him. I feel like all of his players love playing for him. From everything I have seen, he is the kind of coach I want to play for. When you have a coach that you love to play for you are going to give it your all on every down for him, and I think Coach Bates is one of those guys. And this class of D-linemen that we have coming in is going to be really special.”
Bresee also pointed to something different as the reason he chose the Tigers.
“Just the fit that I feel at that school and how comfortable I am and just everything about the school really made it feel like home for me,” he said.
Bresee recorded 36 tackles with 13 sacks last season. He gives Clemson 12 commits for the class of 2020. The other 11 are all rated as four-star prospects.
With the addition of Bresee, Clemson now has the top recruiting class in the country for the class of 2020.
Bresee is the fourth top three overall recruit to choose Clemson since 2016. Dexter Lawrence was ranked No. 2 overall in 2016, quarterback Trevor Lawrence was No. 1 overall in 2018 and defensive end Xavier Thomas was No. 3 overall in 2018.
Clemson is in the running for three other players currently ranked in the 247Sports Composite top 10 rankings as the nation’s No. 1 quarterback DJ Uiagalelei is heavily considering Clemson, as are defensive linemen Jordan Burch and Myles Murphy.
“We will definitely have the number one class,” he said. Swinney “was talking about that before. He said, ‘You guys are going to ruin my speech about never having a number one class.’ That is our class’ job now, is to take that number one spot.”
