The Mountaineers play their first game as a Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) team with a rematch against the Wolverines at “the Big House.” … The last meeting between the two teams, in 2007, became one of the biggest upsets in college football history, with Appalachian State pulling off a 34-32 victory over then-No. 5 Michigan. … Even counting their win over the Wolverines, the Mountaineers have not fared well in season-opening games, losing eight of their past 11. Clemson hits the ground running in its season opener, facing the Bulldogs in a series that dates back to 1897. … Georgia holds a 41-18-4 advantage in the series, but Clemson won last year’s game 38-35. … A win by the Tigers would give them back-to-back victories over the Bulldogs for the first time since 1990. N.C. Central at East Carolina

The Pirates and Eagles square off for the first time in their season openers. … East Carolina has won eight of its past nine home openers. … N.C. Central could prove troublesome on special teams – Adrian Wilkins had an NCAA-best five return touchdowns, and the Eagles led the nation in kick return average (26.5 yards) and kick return TDs (four). Gardner-Webb at Furman

The Bulldogs open the season against the Paladins, ranked 18th in the nation in the Football Championship Subdivision coaches’ poll. … Furman leads the all-time series 3-1, but Gardner-Webb won last year’s game, 28-21 in Boiling Springs. … Both teams are coming off winning seasons – the Bulldogs went 7-5, their best record since 2003; the Paladins finished 8-6, their best record since 2006, and won their 13th Southern Conference title. The Wildcats have a good chance to end their 12-game losing streak in Saturday’s season opener against the Saints. … College of Faith went 1-7 in its inaugural season in 2013. … Davidson has also lost 11 consecutive home games, dating back to the 2011 season. B.K.
