Scouting Johnson C. Smith
The Division II Golden Bulls open their season after going 5-5 in 2013 … They are a preseason pick to finish fourth in the CIAA’s Southern Division … Quarterback Keahn Wallace threw for 1,950 yards and 15 touchdowns last season ... Running back Leander Barney, who started his college career at Georgia Southern, gained 585 yards and scored seven touchdowns last season … Defensive end Jovontay Williams had 12.5 sacks ... Matthias Lambrecht averaged 43.0 yards per punt, which ranked seventh nationally.
Matchup to watch
Charlotte LT Jamal Covington vs. J.C. Smith DE Chris Randolph: Covington is part of a 49ers offensive line that allowed just nine sacks last season, but struggled at times last week in the first half of a season-opening victory against Campbell. Covington will see plenty of Randolph, who had 6.5 sacks and 7.5 tackles for loss last season, and Williams.
• Too bad this game can’t be played again in the future. It’s always good when two schools located so near to each other can play. But that won’t happen with the 49ers moving into the Football Bowl Subdivision in 2015.
• One of Charlotte’s big question marks is in the return game, and they will face another top punter Saturday in J.C. Smith’s Matthias Lambrecht. Campbell’s Adam Lutz averaged 37.9 yards last season and made life difficult for Charlotte returner Corey Nesmith Jr.
• Although the 49ers lost to Division II UNC Pembroke last season, the Golden Bulls are more comparable to fellow CIAA-member Chowan, which Charlotte beat 47-7 in 2013.
• If anybody noticed Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers refer to his alma mater as Butte (Calif.) Community College during Thursday’s game against Seattle, that’s also where 49ers H-back Richard Murphy attended before transferring to Charlotte. Rodgers finished his college career at California.
