Inside the ACC

Three to watch

East Carolina at No. 17 Virginia Tech, noon (ESPN)

The Pirates’ (1-1) three-week ringer continues with a trip to Blacksburg, Va., where the Hokies (2-0) are coming off their biggest win in at least a dozen years.

N.C. State at South Florida, 3:30 p.m. (CBS College Sports)

The Wolfpack (2-0) has been shaky but remains unbeaten, while the Bulls (1-1) let a win over Maryland slip away last week in the Tampa, Fla., sun.

No. 9 Southern California at Boston College, 8 p.m. (ESPN)

The Trojans (2-0) out-slugged Stanford 13-10 last week and make a rare trip to the east coast. The Eagles (1-1) need to shore up their tackling after a tough home loss to Pitt.

Number to know

11 Sacks for Virginia Tech's defense, through two games, which ranks second nationally. ECU has given up one sack in the first two games, which ranks eighth nationally.

Observations

• Great time for ECU (1-1) to catch Virginia Tech (2-0), which is prime for a letdown after the Ohio State upset. The Pirates need to score touchdowns, not field goals, which was the problem in last week's 33-23 loss at South Carolina.

In last year's 15-10 home loss to the Hokies, ECU went 75 yards on the opening drive but managed only 129 the rest of the game.

• Not all uniform changes and variations are to attract recruits. Boston College will feature a red bandana pattern on its helmet, gloves and cleats for Saturday night's game with Southern California in honor of the late Welles Crowther, a former BC lacrosse player who saved dozens of lives during the 9/11 terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center in New York in 2001.

• It's almost like Wake Forest's schedule was a dare. You'd be hard-pressed to find a "Power 5" school that has ever made road trips to Louisiana-Monroe and Utah State in the same season.

Utah State quarterback Chuckie Keeton almost knocked off Auburn in 2011 in his first college start. The Aggies, who finished 9-5 last season, won't be scared of Wake.
