Two of the Pioneer Football League’s offensive leaders square off in their league openers. … The Wildcats lead the PFL in rushing (217 yards per game), while the Eagles are tops in passing (252.7 ypg). … Davidson trails in the all-time series 9-6, including two straight losses. The Golden Bulls go on the road for the first time this season to play the undefeated Wolves for the first time in school history. … Johnson C. Smith won its first game of the season last week, beating Kentucky State 13-6. … West Georgia is off to a 2-0 start for the second straight year, but has never gone 3-0. B.K.

The Deacons face the Black Knights in their final nonconference game before opening ACC play next week at Louisville. … Wake Forest is 9-4 all-time against Army, and has won the past seven games. … Both teams are coming off road losses last week – the Deacons at Utah State 36-24, the Black Knights at Stanford 35-0. The Bulldogs will host the Terriers, one of the nation’s top rushing teams, in a nonconference game Saturday night. … Wofford is tied with The Citadel atop the FCS in rushing at 304 yards per game. But Gardner-Webb is fifth among FCS teams in rushing defense (51.3 ypg). … The Terriers lead the all-time series 16-7, but the Bulldogs took a rain-soaked 3-0 victory last year. B.K.

The Mountaineers have a good chance to get their first win over a Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) team since beating Michigan in 2007. … Appalachian State had an off week after crushing Campbell 66-0 on Sept. 6. … The Golden Eagles have been pounded in both of their losses – 49-0 by Mississippi State on Aug. 30, and 52-12 by No. 3 Alabama last week. … The two teams last played 77 years ago, when then-Mississippi State Teachers College shut out previously-undefeated Appalachian State Teachers College 7-0 in 1937. The 14th-ranked Gamecocks play their first road game of the season against SEC foe Commodores, who have lost their past five meetings against USC. … Both teams are coming off close victories last week – South Carolina 38-35 over then-No. 6 Georgia, Vanderbilt 34-31 over Massachusetts, the Commodores’ first win for new coach Derek Mason. The 22nd-ranked Tigers take on the defending FBS champions and nation’s No. 1 team in both teams’ ACC opener. … The Seminoles are 19-8 all-time against Clemson, including last year’s 51-14 victory at Death Valley. … However, Florida State will be without Heisman Trophy-winning QB Jameis Winston for the first half against the Tigers, his penalty for shouting an obscene phrase on campus earlier in the week.
