The Charlotte 49ers are hiring former Texas Tech defensive coordinator Matt Wallerstedt to be their defensive coordinator, according to a report in SI.com.
Wallerstedt replaces Bruce Tall, under whom the 49ers struggled defensively in their first two seasons of football. Charlotte’s defense allowed an average of 31.6 points and 479.3 yards in total offense last season. In 2013, the 49ers allowed 31.2 points and 439.0 yards per game.
Wallerstedt was Texas Tech’s defensive coordinator in 2013 and through three games of the 2014 season before he resigned. He also was defensive coordinator at Air Force, Wyoming and North Alabama, and was an assistant on the small-college level and at Akron.
The 49ers move up from the NCAA’s Football Championship Subdivision to Conference USA and the Football Bowl Subdivision next season. David Scott
