Ice storm delays Charlotte-area high school basketball tournaments

With a major ice storm bearing down on the Charlotte area, high school basketball tournaments were postponed Monday.

Many schools will try to play Tuesday, though some conferences postponed games until Wednesday.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools have three conference tournaments – the SoMeck 8, the Southwestern 4A and the MECKA 8. Games were postponed Monday. CMS canceled classes Tuesday, so no games will be played. Now the first round of those tournaments are scheduled for Wednesday.

Some events were played Monday, including the N.C. Independent Schools’ swimming championships. Charlotte Latin won a share of the boys’ team title. The N.C. Independent Schools Athletics Association is scheduled to begin its basketball tournament Tuesday. The quarterfinals, semifinals and finals are scheduled for Thursday-Saturday in Asheville.

NCISAA spokesperson Chappell Carter said several first-round playoff games were completed Monday ahead of the storm, and that the NCISAA was waiting to see how many teams would beable to play Tuesday or Wednesday – as well as watching road conditions and the forecast – before deciding to adjust its state championship schedule.

“If we’re having problems Wednesday,” Carter said, “then we’ll make other plans. Some teams got in games (Monday), and some will try to shoot for (Tuesday). Right now, though, it doesn’t look good for Tuesday.”

The N.C. High School Athletic Association will make a decision by noon Wednesday on whether there will be any changes to its state individual wrestling tournament, scheduled to run Thursday through Saturday in Greensboro. The NCHSAA basketball tournament is scheduled to be seeded on Saturday. The start of the spring sports season was scheduled for Monday. With many school systems postponing afternoon events, those practices were postponed.
