On a day when most of the state’s prep basketball teams postponed playoff games due to a monster snowstorm coming in, Weddington’s Stephanie Watts made some history.

In a 68-42 win over North Iredell in the first round of the N.C. 3A girls playoffs, Watts had 28 points, 14 rebounds, six assists and five steals. She also made her 127th 3-point shot, which set a new N.C. High School Athletic Association single-season record.

Watts, a 5-9 senior, is a McDonald’s All-American and will join 23 other top national girls players at the McDonald’s All-American Game April 1 in Chicago.

Weddington was one of several Observer-area teams to get games in Wednesday. Cuthbertson’s boys beat West Iredell 70-39; North Iredell’s boys upset Concord 72-59; Cuthbertson’s girls beat Piedmont 38-32; Community School of Davidson’s girls beat South Stanly 48-41 behind 22 points from Karli Fekete; and South Iredell’s girls beat Central Cabarrus 60-49.

Statewide, many school systems were out Wednesday and many more, including Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, canceled all after-school activities, trying to keep families and teams off roads. Heavy snow began to fall in parts of Charlotte by 6:30 p.m., about the time many of the games played Wednesday were ending.

With so many games postponed, and a heavy snow expected Wednesday night, schools are not expected to be able to play games Thursday, which will force a third straight day of postponements. By 7 p.m. Wednesday, several area school systems had already announced that schools would be closed Thursday, including Cabarrus County. Generally, no athletic events are held if school is not in session.

The N.C. Independent Schools went ahead with plans to hold its state tournament quarterfinals Thursday in Asheville, asking participating teams to come to town ahead of the storm. The association plans to monitor the weather Thursday morning and make decisions to alter its schedule if necessary. Currently, games are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
