Vance High School moved up one spot in this week’s Observer Sweet 16 football poll.

The Cougars moved up to No. 2 after Friday’s 50-49 overtime victory at Butler. The Bulldogs had been at No. 2 for several weeks. After the loss, Butler fell to No. 4 behind Charlotte Catholic.

Vance (13-1) will play a N.C. 4AA Western Regional championship game at Greensboro Page Friday. The Cougars will try to earn their first appearance in an N.C. High School Athletic Association state championship football game.

Charlotte Catholic also moved up one spot in this week’s poll. The Cougars are No. 3. Catholic, which beat regional power East Forsyth on the road last week, will play in the semifinal round for the seventh straight season. Catholic will host Greensboro Dudley in the N.C. 4A Western Regional championship game Friday.
