Central Cabarrus moves into Charlotte Observer girls’ basketball Sweet 16 poll

After winning six games in a row, Central Cabarrus’ girls are in the Charlotte Observer Sweet 16 poll.

The Vikings are led by Hampton signee Mahaley Holit, who is averaging 27 points, six assists and five steals this season. Teammates Kasey Rowden (11 points, two steals, two assists) and Elanna Peay (nine points, 14 rebounds, four steals per game) are also having strong seasons.

Central Cabarrus’ only loss was to No. 3 Hickory Ridge, a game that Holit missed. The teams, both in the South Piedmont 3A conference, have a rematch Jan. 20 at Central Cabarrus.

Note: The boys’ poll runs on Fridays. The Sweet 16 includes eligible teams from the following counties: Mecklenburg, Cabarrus, Gaston, Iredell, Lincoln, Union and portions of York County. Eligible schools must belong to a recognized state association and not allow student-athletes to repeat a grade after starting high school.
