Tuesday's Spring Roundup: Charlotte Latin soccer opens league play with win

Charlotte Latin launched its conference season Tuesday with a 6-1 girls’ soccer victory at Charlotte Country Day.

The Hawks, who captured the state private schools’ Division 3 title last year, improved to 5-1-1 overall and 1-0 in the CISAA. Mary Elliott McCabe led the way, scoring two goals and adding three assists.

Anna Calloway added a pair of goals for Latin. The loss, also Country Day’s conference opener, dropped the Buccaneers to 3-4 overall.

Boys’ soccer

Indian Land 1, Buford 0: Indian Land improved to 11-1 overall, as goalkeeper Buddy Flow recorded a clean sheet. Brandon Sanchez scored the goal, with an assist from Jordan Perry.

Girls’ soccer

Davidson Day 3, Gaston Day 2: Freshman Mary Alexander’s two goals led the Patriots past the Spartans. Regan Pelino added a goal and an assist for Davidson Day.

Forsyth Country Day 6, Charlotte Christian 1: The Knights trailed 5-0 at the half in this nonconference game. The host Furies got three goals from Nasia Ballas.

Indian Land 7, Lancaster 0: South Carolina’s top-ranked 3A team, Indian Land improved to 11-3-1 overall and 5-0 in Region 4 action with this victory. Summer Bishop scored two goals and added two assists, and Kiley Waterbury had a pair of goals.

Boys’ tennis

Charlotte Christian 5, Covenant Day 4: Cameron Hicks downed Covenant Day’s Davis Swann 7-6, 6-3 in No. 1 singles, and Charlotte Christian won this CISAA match. Other winners for the Knights were Andrew Brannon, Drew Metz and Foard Scott in singles, and the doubles team of Hicks-Metz.

Covenant Day (3-1) got victories from Heyward Bryan and Josh Keaton in singles, and the doubles teams of Joe Keaton-William Kepper and Jennings Culpepper-Andrew Hardin.

Girls’ softball

CHERRYVILLE TOURNAMENT

Boiling Springs Crest 10, Cherryville 0: The Chargers improved to 12-1 on the season.

Maiden 13, Kings Mountain 0: Caitlyn Wray went 3-for-3, driving in three runs, and winning pitcher Morgan Bohemier fired a one-hitter.

Maiden 14, Lawndale Burns 1: Burns led 1-0 after two innings, but the Blue Devils recovered for a big victory.

West Lincoln 11, Kings Mountain 9: Bailey Reep slammed a home run, and West Lincoln scored its final two runs in the sixth inning.

West Lincoln 11, Lawndale Burns 1: Dakota Parker had three hits for the victors.

GRAND STRAND TOURNAMENT

Richburg (SC) Lewisville 10, Winston-Salem Parkland 0: Lewisville scored eight times in the third inning. Paige Williamson homered and drove in three runs, and Alexis Odum added a pair of hits.

Tallwood (Va.) 5, Richburg Lewisville 3: Chloe Thomas had two singles and a triple for Lewisville, which dropped to 17-3 on the season. Alexis Odum added two hits.

HIBRITEN TOURNAMENT

Lenoir Hibriten 7, Morganton Freedom 6: Davis Walker had three hits for the victorious Panthers, and Payton Boggs, Krissy Chak and Malea Prestwood each added two hits.

Lenoir Hibriten 7, South Iredell 5: Hibriten scored five times in the bottom of the first. Davis Walker and Payton Boggs each smacked three hits.

South Iredell 12, Belmont South Point 4: The Vikings scored in every inning. A’yanna Waddell and Kirsten Tevepaugh each had three hits.

CISAA

Charlotte Christian 6, Covenant Day 1: The Knights won their CISAA opener, scoring four times in the bottom of the fifth and holding Covenant Day (0-1) to a single hit.
