South Mecklenburg gave one of the state’s top 3A teams all it could handle Tuesday night, but the Sabres’ defensive problems ultimately did them in.

Playing in the first round of the Shelby Easter Tournament, the Sabres fell to undefeated Boiling Springs Crest 7-6 in a 10-inning marathon.

South Mecklenburg (8-3) jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the second inning, thanks in part to Zach Weston’s two-run double. The Sabres scored four runs in the second but left the bases loaded.

That proved to be costly later in the game, as Crest (10-0) battled back. Taking advantage of six South Mecklenburg errors in the first six innings, the Chargers tied the game despite getting only three hits.

Both teams threatened in extra innings, but Crest’s C.J. Mayhue ended the contest in the bottom of the 10th with a lead-off home run.
