Second-round action in North Carolina’s public school baseball, softball and girls’ soccer playoffs takes place Friday and Saturday, with a number of top games across the region.
Meanwhile, the area’s track and field athletes will participate in regional meets, hoping to earn spots in next weekend’s state meets.
Among the top area baseball games in the second round are a pair of 4A contests, with Independence (17-10) visiting Providence (22-3) at 6:30 p.m. Friday, and Lake Norman (24-3) traveling to Ardrey Kell (21-5) at 7 p.m. Friday.
Providence is the SoMeck 7 4A champion, but Independence is among the area’s hottest teams, beating both Myers Park and Harrisburg Hickory Ridge in the past two weeks.

Lake Norman is the I-Meck 4A champ, while Ardrey Kell finished second in the SoMeck 7 4A.
Outside Charlotte, a big 3A second-round baseball game has North Gaston (22-4) traveling to Alexander Central (21-7) at 6 p.m. Saturday.
▪ In softball, top games include the 7 p.m. Saturday 4A contest between Butler (18-5) and host Lake Norman (18-5).
▪ Girls’ soccer games include Harrisburg Hickory Ridge (14-5-2) at Hough (15-4-1), set for 7 p.m. Friday; and the 7:30 p.m. Saturday match between Boone Watauga (17-2) and host Charlotte Catholic (21-1).

Greensboro Caldwell Academy 4, Carmel Christian 3: Carmel Christian took a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh of this 2A private school game, but Caldwell Academy rallied for the victory.
Rock Hill Westminster Catawba 10, Gaston Day 4: Westminster Catawba scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth, breaking open what had been a 6-4 game in the 2A private school playoffs. Zach Clark homered for Gaston Day.
Statesville Christian 3, Hickory Christian 1: The Knights outhit Statesville Christian 10-5 but dropped this 1A private school game. B.J. Lomax homered and scored twice for the victorious Lions, and the second of three pitchers, Josh Frye, earned the victory.
Northwest Guilford 10, Olympic 0: The victorious Vikings scored in every inning and slammed 10 hits off Olympic in this second-round 4A playoff game.
Asheville Christian 5, Davidson Day 0: The Patriots’ hopes in the private school 2A playoffs ended with this shutout loss.
