Charlotte Latin continued its advance toward another North Carolina private schools’ Class 3A girls’ soccer title Friday night with a 5-0 blanking of Covenant Day.
The Hawks’ quarterfinal victory moves them into the semifinals against the winner of Saturday’s match between North Raleigh Christian and High Point Wesleyan. Charlotte Latin is top-seeded in the 3A tournament.
The Hawks (17-1-1) got three goals from school all-time scoring leader Mary Elliott McCabe, and Claudia Dieker added two assists. Anna Calloway had a goal and an assist.
Kate Anderson, Cece Colombo (Charlotte Latin, girls’ lacrosse): Anderson and Colombo each scored three goals and added an assist in the Hawks’ 19-7 private school playoff quarterfinal victory over Cary Academy.
Gabby Baylog (Marvin Ridge girls’ softball): Baylor pitched a three-hitter as the Mavericks edged West Rowan 5-4 in a second-round 3A game.
Emerson Douds (Weddington boys’ track): Douds, a junior won the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes at the 3A Midwest Regional track and field meet in Greensboro. He also finished second in the 400-meter dash.
Madison Maynard (Indian Trail Metrolina Christian girls’ softball): Maynard hit her second grand slam homer of the season, helping her team trounce Charlotte Christian 13-1 in the first round of the 3A private school playoffs.
Chloe Thomas (Richburg Lewisville girls’ softball): Thomas threw a shutout and Lewisville advanced to the S.C. 1A championship series against East Clarendon, beating McBee 2-0 in the Upper State finals.
Track and field
Weddington’s boys’ team dominated running events Friday at the 3A Midwest Regional at Greensboro Dudley High. Girls’ competition was led by Winston-Salem Parkland, Southwest Guilford, and Northern Guilford. Weddington’s Emerson Douds won two events and was second in another.
Other area double-winners were Joshua Parks of Kannapolis A.L. Brown and Anna Bristle of Monroe Parkwood.

Fort Mill 2, Duncan Byrnes 0: Payton Lemire tossed a four-hit shutout, and the Yellowjackets forced a second game with Byrnes in the Upper State finals.
Duncan Byrnes 14, Fort Mill 1: With a berth in the state finals at stake, Byrnes scored eight runs in the first three innings and pulled away.

Mooresville 6, Pembroke Purnell Swett 2: Mooresville scored three times in the bottom of the second for a 4-0 lead and held on for a second-round victory.
Providence 14, High Point Central 0: The Panthers blew this game open early and advanced to the third round, improving to 22-3.

Alexander Central 8, South Iredell 6: This game turned into a slugfest, with Lanie Goforth and Chesney Millsaps each slamming two home runs for Alexander Central. South Iredell sisters Abbey and Kelby Goodrum also homered.
Boiling Springs Crest 10, Northern Guilford 0: Sydney Kale tossed a one-hitter for the Chargers.
Concord Cox Mill 7, Southwest Guilford 0: The Chargers (16-8) pulled an upset over the Cowboys (21-4).
Marvin Ridge 5, West Rowan 4: Winning pitcher Gabby Baylog singled and homered, and teammate Ally Bigham had two hits. Parker Greene, who hit two homers for West Rowan in the first round, had two of the Falcons’ three hits Friday night.
Waynesville Tuscola 2, Central Cabarrus 0: Losing pitcher Riley Tucker tossed a one-hitter and allowed no earned runs, but the Vikings were blanked on two hits.

Charlotte Country Day 4, Covenant Day 3: Alyssa Farmer pitched a five-hitter, and Katie batten had two hits, scored a run, drove in a run, and reached on a walk for the Buccaneers in this first-round game.

Claremont Bunker Hill 11, Maiden 2: Up 3-1, the Bears broke it open with five runs in the top of the fifth.

Landrum 15, Lancaster Buford 0: Landrum scored five runs in the bottom of the first and rolled to an Upper State championship, earning a berth in the state finals.

Richburg Lewisville 2, McBee 0: The Lions captured the Upper State title and gained a berth in the state finals. They scored in the first inning on a triple by Chloe Thomas, who then scored on an error, and added a run in the fifth on a wild pitch.
