NC Prep Track Update: Cuthbertson, Mountain Island win track championships

Cuthbertson’s boys and girls won N.C. 4A state track championships Saturday and Mountain Island Charter won the boys 1A title.

Cuthbertson’s boys had 57 points, six points clear of Mount Tabor, and Ardrey Kell was third (38).

Cuthbertson’s girls had 64 points, six ahead of Mallard Creek. Olympic was third. Cuthbertson’s boys and girls teams won the 3A state championship last year before moving up a class. Mountain Island Charter repeated as 1A boys state champs.

Outstanding individual performers included HIghland Tech’s Lauren Tolbert who won the 100-, 200- and 800-meters in the girls 1A finals. Tolbert set a new meet record in the 800, running a time of 2:09.38, easily snapping a six-year-old record of 2:12.26 set by Community School’s Malia Ellington in 2015. Tolbert was named 1A girls meet MVP.

In the boys 1A, Mountain Island Charter’s Trevin Moyer won the 100, 200 and 400-meter dashes.
