Mother of Charlotte area basketball player who collapsed: ‘I feel the love and support’
The Charlotte-area high school basketball player who collapsed during a conference playoff game stayed in a local hospital intensive care unit overnight as doctors monitored his heart, his mother said Wednesday.
Tasha Price said she “feels the love and support” from well-wishers after her son, Henry Price, a Rocky River senior basketball player, lost consciousness during the second quarter of a Southwestern 4A conference quarterfinal game on Tuesday night. They were playing against rival Butler.
He laid motionless on the court and was initially attended to by Rocky River trainer Wesley Hickling. The gym was quickly cleared out, and medics used an AED, or automated external defibrillator, on site before he was taken away by ambulance.
“Oh boy, it’s truly been a wave of emotions,” Tasha Price wrote in a text message. “However, I truly feel the love and support from my Rocky (River) family. ... A special sincere thank you to (Hickling) for allowing God to use his hands to keep my baby breathing.”
She thanked the community for “all for the prayers and encouraging words.”
Wednesday, Henry Price had an MRI to help determine next steps, Tasha Price said. Results are expected Thursday, but Tasha Price said it was “almost certain” that her son would have a defibrillator placed in his chest to prevent future episodes.
The Southwestern 4A tournament was postponed Tuesday night and was initially rescheduled to Wednesday. But officials again postponed Wednesday’s action to Thursday after consulting with coaches, athletic directors and players.
