North Mecklenburg’s football program took another step in its resurgence Friday with a 40-0 thumping of crosstown rival Hopewell.
North Meck had not beaten Hopewell on the Titans’ home field in six tries, and had dropped nine of 14 games in the series overall since the teams first met in 2001.
But Friday, the Vikings followed up their 6-0 home win over Hopewell last year with a dominating defensive performance that included three interception returns for touchdowns. Sophomore running back Emanuel Wilson paced the North Meck offense with 151 yards rushing on 15 carries and one touchdown.
After a scoreless first quarter, Kendall Coles hit Kevin Buford for a 29-yard touchdown pass, then scored on a 1-yard run before the half.
In the second half, Dontevian Byrd (20 yards), Jordan McCormick (50 yards) and Amaur Mason (65 yards) returned interceptions for touchdowns for the Vikings. Wilson scored the other North Meck touchdown on a 1-yard plunge.
Quote: “We sent a message tonight. People are going to have to start accounting for us, especially come playoff time.” – North Meck coach Brad Baker
Records: North Meck is 6-1, 2-1 in MECKA 4A. Hopewell is 1-7, 0-3.
Worth mentioning: North Meck had more than 150 yards on four interception returns (three going for touchdowns), more than Hopewell could manage on offense for the game. Former Hopewell standout Chaz Green, who graduated in 2007, is now an assistant on Baker’s staff at North Meck. The Vikings have already doubled their win total for last season.
What’s next: North Meck is off next week before traveling to Vance for a MECKA 4A game on Oct. 23; Hopewell is at West Charlotte next week for a conference game.
