Notebook: Private schools all-star games to tip Saturday at Providence Day

Some of the state’s top senior private school boys’ and girls’ high school basketball players will play Saturday at Providence Day.

The annual N.C. Private School All-Star Basketball game, which will begin at 1 p.m., will be broadcast live on Time Warner Cable Sports Channel. Admission is $7 for adults and $5 for students.

The boys’ game will feature eight players who have signed scholarships to play college basketball next season. Shonn Brown (Charlotte Christian) and Kevin Billerman (Ravenscroft) are state championship coaches who bring more than 50 combined years of coaching at the high school and college levels to this year’s game.

The girls’ game will feature five players who have signed with colleges. Josh Springer (Providence Day) and Kevin Dennison (Fayetteville Academy) have won multiple state titles between them and will be coaching in the game.

▪ Josh Coley told the Observer that Carmel Christian has removed him as coach after one season. Under Coley, Carmel Christian finished 23-8 and was 14-0 in the Southern Piedmont Athletic Association. It won the conference tournament but did not earn a bid to the N.C. Independent Schools playoffs.

▪ Several Observer-area stars will play in the West vs. Midwest 1A All-Star Basketball games March 19 at Cherokee High: Patrick Austin, Dajavon Chesney, Mountain Island Charter; DJ Camp, Sean Kolesar, Pine Lake Prep; John McKibbin, Community School of Davidson; Somad Muhammed, Piedmont Community Charter; Logan Foster, Joe Fortkort, Lincoln Charter; Zachary Dawkins, Highland Tech; and Christian Jones, Tim Whisnant, Cherryville High.

Just weeks after hiring Hopewell’s Charlie Gray as its football coach, Northwest Cabarrus has re-opened its search.

Gray, 40, told the Observer on Friday afternoon that outgoing Northwest Cabarrus principal Mike Jolley informed him this week that the his new job was going to be vacated. Gray resigned from Hopewell on Feb. 23 but declined to say why.

Jolley is going to become the new principal at Concord High.

Jolley “told me he had to vacate the position Tuesday,” Gray said. “He said with him leaving and it being a quick turnaround, they have to give the incoming principal a chance to have a say as to who he wants to hire as football coach.”

Gray said he planned to re-apply for the position.

▪ Former Charlotte Latin assistant Mike Hawks is the new coach of the Carolina Pride, a 12-year-old program comprised of mainly home-schooled student-athletes. All coaching personnel are volunteers.

The first Tar Heel Cup will be May 21-22 at Cramer Mountain Golf Club. The tournament, put together by the N.C. Golf Coaches Association, will feature the top 24 boys’ and girls’ N.C. golfers in an East vs. West format similar to the Ryder Cup.
