N.C. Preps has released its updated high school basketball rankings for rising seniors, juniors and sophomores. Each is filled with Observer-area stars.

The top recruit in North Carolina is Concord Robinson point guard Lavar Batts, a 6-1 senior point guard. Batts led Robinson to the N.C. 3A state championship last season and is considered a top 100 national recruit.

Three other area players ranked among the top 10: Lincolnton’s Sage Surratt (No. 5); Independence’s Justyn Hamilton (No. 7); and Weddington’s Ryan Schwieger (No. 8).

▪ In the 2018 class, shaping up to be one the best in state history, Providence Day point guard Devon Dotson -- who carries at least a dozen Division I offers -- is No. 1, followed by Concord’s Rechon Black. Cannon’s Jairus Hamilton is No. 4, Gaston Day’s Nate Hinton is No. 5, Providence Day’s Trey Wertz is No. 8, and Berry’s Jamarius Burton is No. 10. Get complete 2018 rankings here.

Four players are considered top 50 national recruits in the class: Dotson, Black, Hamilton and Greenfield School’s Coby White. White is ranked No. 3 in the state by NC Preps.

▪ In the 2019 class, several area players are ranked in the N.C. top 10: Cox Mill’s Wendell Moore was No. 1, Charlotte Christian’s B.J. Mack was No. 3, Rocky River’s Raquan Brown is No. 4 and North Meck’s Jaelyn Withers was No. 8. For the complete 2019 rankings, click here.
