Butler holds onto No. 1 in Observer Sweet 16 football poll

Which high school football team is really the best in the Observer’s 99-school coverage area in Cabarrus, Gaston, Iredell, Lincoln, Mecklenburg, Union and York counties?

The three high school sportswriters who vote on the poll split the first-place votes this week. No. 1 Butler, No. 2 Mallard Creek and No. 3 Independence each received a vote after Butler, last week’s top-ranked team, was upset 55-54 in overtime Saturday by Richmond Senior. In the final 90 seconds of regulation, the Bulldogs lost a 15-point lead.

Butler remained in the No. 1 spot, despite the loss, getting one more point than Mallard Creek and two more than Independence.

Butler beat Mallard Creek by a point earlier this season; Independence has not played either team.

The Patriots are scheduled to play Butler on Nov. 7 to end the regular season.
