Welcome, Charlotte Latin, to the Observer Sweet 16 football poll.
The Hawks haven’t won a state championship since 2009, and some Hawks supporters believe this is the best team the school has fielded since then. The Hawks are averaging 51.3 points and have scored 118 in their past two games. Latin (7-1) is in the poll at No. 15 this week.
The Hawks have a big non-conference game Friday at No. 14 Davidson Day. Davidson Day (8-0) is trying to complete its first unbeaten season.
South Mecklenburg dropped out of the poll this week after a narrow loss to No. 5 Charlotte Catholic on the road Friday, and Independence is now an outright No. 1. The Patriots moved into a tie for the top spot last week, their first time being ranked that high in nearly six years.
