Observer’s Sweet 16 football poll 11.25.14

Two teams join the Sweet 16 this week and the preseason No. 1 returned to the top spot.

Mallard Creek beat Butler 56-14 last week in the second round of the N.C. 4AA playoffs, and after Hough upset No. 1 Independence, the Mavericks have returned to the top spot. Mallard Creek began the season nationally ranked and No. 1 in the Sweet 16 before losing 28-27 to Butler in August.

Independence, after its first loss, fell to No. 5. Hough, which has been in and out of the poll, jumped four spots to No. 3 after the biggest win in school history.

Two teams joined the poll this week: Rocky River is back in at No. 14 and playing for the school’s first regional berth this week; and Gastonia’s Forestview is in at No. 16 after winning nine straight games after a two-game losing streak in September.
